The National Futsal Series is back! After more than a year away, top flight league futsal returns in England. To kick off the inaugural Summer Showdown, the Women’s Super Series and National Futsal Series Two have some brilliant fixtures. Here’s the lowdown.
Uni of Liverpool x Loughborough Students
Two university based sides that won’t be familiar to each other from the last Women’s Super Series as North meets South at the University of Wolverhampton. The nature of university teams means groups of players come and go. Loughborough faced some tough tasks in their WSS outing in 2019/20, but it won’t get any easier as Uni of Liverpool pushed both Cheshire and Manchester hard last time round.
Liverbird x Birmingham
Liverbird travel to the home of their opposition for this one, as they face one of the strongest teams from 2019/20 in Birmingham. The Liverpudlian team have some experienced players in their ranks and may be able to break up the rhythm of the game, should they need it, but Birmingham possess some experience of their own, including players of Wolves (Alisha Miller) and West Brom (Leigh Dugmore) that helped them push London Helvecia right to the end in the Women’s Super Series.
London Helvecia x Reading Royals
What an introduction to the National Futsal Series for Reading Royals. They face up against arguably the strongest women’s team in the country in London Helvecia. Helvecia were leading the way in the Women’s Super Series prior to the curtailment of the ‘19/20 season and will want to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible. Reading Royals, on the other hand, will want to build on their mini pre-season held outdoors and challenge themselves against the best as they look to upset the women’s futsal landscape in the south of England.
Derby x London Genesis
It might be a new team in London Genesis but it’s certainly not a name that is unfamiliar to English futsal. Genesis make their women’s futsal debut with a team that will be looking to make their mark in the capital. Their first National Futsal Series outing sees them travelling to the second city to face a Derby team that will want to build on their time in the Women’s Super Series so far. Experience counts for a lot in futsal and that is something Derby can carry into this fixture, hoping to take an early scalp from a big English name.
Bolton x Bedford
Another fixture, another brand new team. Bolton have assembled a team of big hitters and will want to start with all cylinders firing as they meet Bedford. One of the most improved teams over the last couple of years in women’s futsal, Bedford started to pick up their form just before the pandemic hit in 2020 and have continued to get minutes wherever possible since. It might be last on the fixture list for the day but this is definitely one to watch!
Loughborough Students Dev x Team Sunderland
Northern representation in this weeks games comes via two members of NFS Two North that share their roots in the University world. Loughborough Students have a long and illustrious history in futsal and there are many that have walked this path on their route to representing their country. Team Sunderland had a baptism of fire in their first season as NFS members showing much resilience along the way and, with that experience now under their belt, they will want to test themselves against the development side of The Students.
London Genesis x Chelsea Foundation
Two NFS Two South originals meet again this weekend as London Genesis face the Chelsea FC Foundation in the battle for top spot in Group D. A tough game awaits Chelsea Foundation as they square up against one of the top entertainers of English futsal in years gone by and former club of now Premier League player Max Kilman.
Chelsea Foundation will want to prove that their unfinished table position is not a true reflection of their ability whereas London Genesis know that the key to success is their consistency and will want to get a good start out of the blocks!
Pro Dev x Reading Royals
Two newcomers. Pro Futsal were hot on the heels of London Helvecia before the curtailment of 2019/20 and now get the ability to showcase their development squad. Reading Royals, will be hoping to go out of the NFS with a bang after announcing a move to LNFS England in recent weeks.
Two clubs that are keen to progress on and off the court. This week it will be a challenge on the court for the development squad of Pro to keep up with a strong Reading Royals team that share an international partnership with French champions and UEFA Futsal Champions League competitors ACCS.
Southend x Bedford
Southend are another newcomer to The NFS and their first taste of action in the Summer Showdown is a Bedford side that has been on the up for a couple of years. Their 2019/20 NFS season contained ups and downs, including the big scalp of London Escolla so expect them to want to continue that growth over the next few weeks! Southend might be an unknown to their opposition but that represents the excitement or surprise when they come together – we’re looking forward to a good game between the two!
